Did my first rally-cross event, holy crap is that fun! Shout out to shop teacher for nudging me to go.
Tow rig and rally truck heading out
This first corner was a bitch. My truck was the largest vehicle running and i had to crank the wheel all the way to make the turn.
The only damage was a broken exhaust on the last run. It’s been repaired multiple times already though so no biggy.
Well I guess it wasn’t the only damage...tore up the yard a bit getting the tow rig out of storage last week.

You’re rallycrossing a ‘92-’96 F-150 supercab 4x4... You are my hero.

It was a blast for sure

You did a great job! I was genuinely impressed with the way you sliced and diced your way through the course in that beast.
I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I hope you’ll keep coming out.

Dude has some skills too!

Looks awesome, I hope to be able to join you guys in the future, hoping to get credit cards paid off this summer and then pick up a fun beater for stuff like this.

Cool! There are three or four events in the fall this year.

All in Byron? Or different places? What kind of Craigslist heaps should I be looking at? I’ve never even autocrossed before and don’t really care about being competitive at least to start, it just looks like a blast. Also do you pay per car or per driver? I’m trying to talk my wife into giving it a shot also and just curious.

Stateline rallycross only runs at Byron right now. They’ve done some others in the past at other places, which I haven’t been to, but everything on the schedule this year is at Byron.
I would stick with something 2wd that’s relatively tough, simple and cheap to work on and repair. The RallyMetro has proven to be tough as nails and is way more fun to rive than I thought it would be. There’s always a few Neons in various states of disrepair there. There’s always a Miata or three there. I’d like to get an S-10 or a Ranger whenever the Metro gives up the ghost, just because I think that would be fun.
You pay per driver.

It was awesome meeting you guys! That truck was surprisingly good out there too.
Hopefully you can make it back in to another one.
(Oh, I am so jealous of that dually it’s not funny. What a beautiful truck!)

Yea, it was great meeting you too. I’ll definitely be back, but most likely not until fall.

Panther/p71-good idea or great idea? (Or terrible idea?)

I think it’s a good idea. I could see myself doing that as well. It’s a little on the big side for some of the tight turns, but if Master Mario can hustle that F-150 around those, and I also did it once in a Roadmaster wagon, I don’t see any reason why a P-71 couldn’t do it and be a ton of fun.

Good to know, I was watching some onboards from last weekend by a guy with a fozzy xt, some parts looked pretty sandy so I dunno how likely I’d be to get stuck its hard to tell from youtube lol especially with no firsthand experience. I showed my wife though and after she finally tore her eyes away from his wife’s rack she admitted it looked like fun. If it was just me I’d go for something like the rally metro but my wife won’t drive stick and actually owned a panther at one point so I’ll probably look at cheap tough rwd v8s, Panthers, Mark 7s and 8s, maybe b bodies if you did it in the roadie.

Hahaha! She was a cutie. I was handing out times when they each did their first four runs, so I know the one labeled wife run #4 was roughly the same time as my slower times in the RallyMetro. She improved on each of the four runs when I was handing out times.
Any of those on a set of snow tires, and you’ll be good. The only time I’ve seen people get stuck, is the muddy race we had last November. Most everyone got stuck that race.
I will say the Roadie’s front wheels were bouncing around like crazy, despite having brand new shocks. It made braking difficult. I think a later P-71 with its improved suspension, would be the hot ticket.

It was just a funny flip on gender roles, I’m like honey you’re not even looking at the course and she’s like I can’t stop staring. Didn’t think about snow tires but makes sense, a p71 would probably be the best bet but I have always lusted after 3rd gen camaros so this would maybe be an excuse to get a ratty one. Either way, hopefully we can make it out sometime this year, but it might not be till next year depending on how the summer goes.

Hahaha!
Have you crawled into my head??? I’ve been thinking about a ratty 3rd gen rally Camaro, ever since my first time out. They’re all wrong for it, with the huge front overhang and floppy bodies, but I still want one!
Even if buying a car isn’t in the cards this year, you should still come out to an event. If you have a helmet, bring it (or borrow one from someone there), and I’ll be happy to give you a ride. I won’t be at the June event (I’ll be at the IndyCar race at Road America), but I’ll be there for all the others.

Yeah we’ll have to try to make it out, I’m starting a new job Monday that will give me Saturdays off for the first time ever so that’s sweet. And now I feel like I need to be focusing on cameros instead of p71s lol. Just post reminders of when the events will be for us on OPPO.

Oh man, a 3rd gen RallyCamaro would be epic!
The events this year are all on Sundays. Do you have, or can you get one of those off? I will be posting reminders, but the next event I’ll be attending is July 22nd.

Sundays work too i have real weekends now, assuming I stay at this job for more than a couple months which I’ve struggled with since last June. How important do you think an LSD is? I know some p71s had them but I don’t think very many. I think I’d probably get a panther first as a starter and then if we get serious enough to do an actual build a rallymero would be on the table for sure.

An LSD will definitely help you go quicker, but it’s not like you’ll get stuck without one. I think most P-71's have them though.

DUDE!! You’re second place in the season championship points in that beast!
![]() 05/01/2018 at 09:48 |
|
Well that’s pretty cool. Do you know how points are determined though? I can’t figure out the rhyme or reason. I would have thought it would be a straight 1st, 2nd, 3rd... for each class, but that doesn’t look to be the case.
![]() 05/01/2018 at 09:51 |

Nevermind, I just saw they explain the points in a Facebook post
![]() 05/01/2018 at 11:44 |

I’ve never actually paid attention to the points. I’m never in contention :)
![]() 05/01/2018 at 11:54 |

I guess it’s easy to be in contention when there’s only 2 vehicles in your class :)

It helps! Maybe I should get a full size truck when the Metro shats the bed :)

Something just like that! The only way it could be better, is if it were a manual. I’m not buying anything while the Metro is still kicking though :)
